Durian SS2, Kuala Lumpar

Some describe this spiky fruit as smelling of a wasteland of heavily soiled nappies on a hot summer’s day, rotting gazelle meat or the unchanged socks of a seven day hiker.

But for others, this is pure fruit heaven with a sweetness that is unparalleled.

Take a trip to durian stalls in SS2, and be welcomed by a bevy of durians graded and priced to meet most budgets and tastes. Leave the haters in the car.

Durian the king of fruits for some, a sweating baboon’s crouch for others.

Abirami, Kuala Lumpur

I’m seeing banana leaves in a new light like Collingwood saw Leigh Brown. Mr Versatile.

Order a selection of dishes from the bain marie.

Soak the rice in fish/chicken/dahl curry smashed down on the banana leaf and dig in.

I’m thinking Lite ‘n’ Easy when I get back to Oz.

Cendol and Tidbits, Kuala Lumpur

A darn good example here, the green mini worm shaped jellies perfectly springy and silky, sweetness from a good amount of palm sugar, red bean and creamed corn.  Benchmark set.

Forget whatever diet and cholesterol lowering plan you were on, gorge on the open air stalls showcasing battered and fried things including pisang goreng (fried banana fritter), Keropok (prawn crackers), cucur udang (prawn fritters), cempedak madu (jackfruit like).

Supersizing me.

Restoran Ahwa, Kuala Lumpur

Now if you get taken to a coffee shop in KL, you might be in for a surprise.

And when you get there, your thoughts might drift to asking why has the caffeine and the dude or dudette with the intricate tattoo sleeve, nerdcore thick rimmed glasses, nose ring at the shiny La Marzocco been replaced with a setting of plastic outdoor chairs and chefs at the woks in tiny portable carts?

So there ain’t too much coffee going around, but if you’re a fatty like me, what they serve up more than compensates.

Hokkien Mee – deliciously rich and sticky with a sweetness and charred savoury from the oyster sauce

Kuay Teow – complete with crunch pork lard

Satay

Chicken Wings

Don’t expect to lose weight passing through the long blacks here.  This is KL’s “coffee shop”.
