Miso Korean Cafe

Quiet on a weekday, unassuming, but sticks out like a Korean needle in a Western Bentleigh haystack that is slowly catching up with the times. Won’t find anything you can’t get in Carnegie or Holmesglen, the lunch time bento box’s comes with salad and mini pancakes but value could be better with the addition of fried mandoo or something. Beef bulgogi not the nicely browned caramelised hot plate stuff but has all the sweet flavours you’d expect. Dolsot bibimbap, hotpot is scorching for the DYI stir-fry but let down by rice that was just on the wrong side of soft. That’s just being overly critical though. I’ll should just harden up instead.

Sho Noodle Bar

She was a ho, for Sho... that line has no relevance to Sho Noodle bar at Crown nestled nicely between Baccarat, Roulette and poker machines. This nicely designed place with it's big open kitchen is professionally serviced and provides a South Eastern Asian themed menu. The dishes we order are acceptable but very pedestrian, the laksa stock lacking depth and the char kway teow lacking flavour. When the dishes are priced at 50% more than locals (Penang Coffee House, Nonya Hut, Straits Cafe) and they are 50% less tasty - the value just isn't there. My recommendation? Leave earlier and so you can secure a seat at the Rockpool Bar.

Janus Bakkerij, Wellington

I’m not taking the risk putting on a faux Dutch accent (see Mike Myers) for fear of not being welcomed back to this awesome bakery with the designer logo of a high end hairdresser and fashion house blend of earthy good looks more common for commercial winery.

A bowl of strong, Bravo roasted on site will widen the eyes of coffee wimps. The bevy of sweets on display are tantalising, as is the pride in preparing the cloudy creamy scrambled eggs on a doorstopper slice of in-house multigrain. Yummo Janus, you can be my far-jar (or vader).

Chilli Express India

Curry in a hurry is what they are dishing out at Chillipadi's offshoot Chilli India that isn't a stretch cuisine too far. Indian food that won't offend, the butter chicken is entertaining, beef vindaloo stewed down and mild for a chilli weakling like myself.

Ayam Goreng 99, Kingsford

They may have blinged the place up a little with a fresh coat of paint, some new plastic tumblers and laminated menus, but their recipe for amazing Indonesian grilled chicken hasn’t changed one bit. Good etiquette is well forgotten during the assault on the soy sweet yet spiced flavour on the well charred poultry. KFC it ain’t… it’s better. Finger and plate licking good.

Mamak, Haymarket

They may have expanded this Malaysian Sydney favourite a little but that only means you get your roti fix twice as fast. I’d want them to hook it to my veins but liquidising the fried flat bread but that won’t let you to enjoy the elegant fluffy, crispiness. Heaven sent straight from the hot plate. And man do I want it bad.

Two Good Eggs, Surry Hills

A minimalist corner café in Surry Hills serving up the usual breakfast things for eating. Toby Estate coffee kick starts the brain, but all the lemon seems to have ended up in the juice of mint, pineapple and apple instead of the toothless Hollandaise. Sonoma bread is quality but not so the over poached organic eggs that were mediocre rather than good.

RACV Club Resort, Cape Schanck

A retreat for the newly and oldly retired. There’s accommodation with premium ocean views amongst the tranquil greenery. An army of buggies for those who want to avoid the only physical aspect of the game to traverse the challenging undulating golf course. The scent of opulent over 65s. Welcome to the RACV Club Resort at Cape Schanck.

Having settled into the beautiful surrounds, wake up to a fully loaded breakfast buffet where real honeycomb is the feature and a must eat sweet addition for the fresh berry yoghurt and porridge. If you haven’t completely gorged yourself at first meal, a selection of baguettes, sandwiches, bagels and wraps filled with gourmet greens, relishes, cheese and cold cuts of turkey, ham or beef awaits for lunch.

Dinner is a roast meat buffet extravaganza on Sundays but otherwise you’ll have to be content choosing 3 courses for a reasonable $55 or pasta specials. A medallion of juicy Gippsland eye fillet cooked to order squats on a baked buttery square of roasted spud, coarsely pulsed mushrooms and drizzled with a caramelised shallot jus that’s the highlight of the menu. However both entrees of calamari with a healthy amount of purple cabbage, a sweet nam jim dressing and crunch of a chilli toffee praline and scallops on shredded zucchini and saffron sauce both overcooked that would not please teeth of the general clientele. Unless the kitchen are assuming the diners suffered from amnesia, the same purple combo above garnished cash note thin slices of lightly salted duck breast instead of Japanese mayo, sweet soy and microherbs and the pan-seared tuna missing the mustard vinaigrette. Sure to set you on the road to forehead wrinkle highway from all the frowning after a 45 minute wait.

If it’s not past bedtime, diabetics beware the passionfruit semifreddo scented by the mango shell it comes in with mango and raspberry compote that’s both refreshing and dangerously sweet. Rhubarb ice cream adds acidity to the dense, moist chocolate pudding. A great pear and strawberry crumble is paired with a safe vanilla ice cream.

If I were living off my super, I’d happily spend the time and saved hard-earn here to indulge. So there are a few flaws but you’d care less at a resort this nice. Can’t wait to not have to work anymore.
