Lake House (2009)

So it’s back to the Victorian country’s crown jewel for a lazy degustation lunch. What an absolute epic lunch it was. Given the summer heat, a fresh carpaccio of kingfish simply dressed in a quality olive oil and bits of pancetta hit the spot to get us under way. Goats cheese tortellini rich and creamy, chopped tomatoes and basil adds lightness. A pretty beetroot plate swipe contrasts a smoked eel roll but here’s where the gentle summer lunch gets heavier.

Crisped confit chicken wings with boudin blanc, sweetcorn and blackbean needs the mound of greens to balance the powerful yet tasty chook, you’d be very happy having the slice of suckling pig, quail, braised shitake topped with an intense trotter and meat jus. Roasted lamb lacks impact given the previous two dishes. Desert was a very strange warm berry gelee, its texture like hard crumbly jelly, and tart yoghurt gelato. I would have been happier with Aeroplane’s. Baring two waiters, it was a dump and run affair, disappointing for an establishment that is renowned for its quality service and gone with it some of the shine.

3 / 5 yums!
