There’s something unnerving about a place that makes you feel like you’re back in the 1970s. Free Love and Peace… man. From the shops, the dry cleaners, the sandwich shop that refuse to upgrade with the times, to The Naughty Chef, this little hole in the wall Vietnamese Noodle Shop under Wynyard Station. Very trippy.
Limited choices, but that’s a good thing, because I’m sure the added complexity would make feeding the crowd clambering to order that much more difficult. A shady converted open shop filled with a mish mash of plastic tables and chairs that’s very hawker Saigon style is where you take your soup noodles to slurp down. The spicy beef noodle soup a favourite, a pleasant beef stock, chucks of brisket stewed down breaking easy in the yapper, springy rice noodles submerged below the hot broth.
With the first mouthful, any preconceived thoughts of the place are forgotten. If only I could forget my convulsions to put on a bandana and make peace signs.
2.5 / 5 yums!
