Hidden away on a commercial strip opposite the Mount Waverley shopping square, there lies a little Japanese takeaway. Rice paper screens, sake wine barrels and a photo menu prevent curious sticky beaks like myself, but head inside and past the sushi bar is a small, makeshift dine in room decorated with a few photos and pieces.
It’s a pretty normal menu list of sushi, sashimi, a few udon and ramen noodles and rice bowls including a curry and teriyaki chicken. Katsu-Don’s egg and onion sauce is nice, a good balance of salty soy and mirin sweetness but the pork crumbed cutlet could have been a crunchier and meat more trimmed. Unagi-don not bad either, the eel meat is well grilled but a bit heavy on the super sweet teriyaki BBQ sauce that requires all the rice underneath if you want to finish it all.
Quiet, unassuming and pretty good for a suburban Japanese cafe. If only it were closer to home. Nuts.
