Old Town Kopitiam, Melbourne

There is not much old in this brand spanking new Malaysian style coffee shop that serves up most of your favourite drinks and dishes. There’s hawker stuff such as nasi lemak, laksa, har mee, roti, bak kut teh and char kway teow. Don’t expect late night curries, they seem to have run out quite early. But you can still enjoy a teh or kopi tarik and a slice of kaya coconut paste toast.

Choosing from meals still available, the Hainanese chicken rice won’t be as flavoursome as your auntie’s homemade version. A similar sliced poached chicken comes with the Ipoh Sar Hor Fun, rice noodles served in a clear chicken broth that could cure a flu sufferer.

Mass loads of Malaysian ex-pats might find a bit of home here, a bit of old town in the heart of Chinatown.
