Pizza Espresso

A shot of pizza in a tiny coffee cup!? This I had to try!

Imagine the disappointment when we arrived at this Lower Templestowe restaurant to find no shots, but real, quality wood fire pizza. Well since we were here…

Except for the massive mound and chimney from which most of the food comes from, there’s a Coles Smart Choice bareness inside. No matter because along with the black tabletops and blackboards, the lack of lighting creates a moody level of darkness.

I’m starting to see the espresso part of the name too. Most of the pizza choices consist of four toppings or less, so they’d better come out bloody fast. And we’re not kept waiting long for the very minimalist, but awesome Italian thin flat bread. A quality dough mixture is baked, spread with a fresh, tangy tomato paste, bits of melted fior di latte, varied with salsiccia (Italian snag) e (&) funghi (mushroom) and frutti di mare (seafood of prawn, octopus, mussels). For something with a bit more substance, there are pastas including a smashing el dente fettuccine, crushed roma tomato sauce, rocket tiger prawns prettily arranged tail up looking like the blades of a circular saw.

For desserts, the nutella calzone critical as you must release the gooey hazelnut chocolate spread that oozes from the folded pizza casing to the safety of your mouth. A special small round base covered with butterscotch sauce with a scoop of vanilla ice cream melting on top another winner.

Certainly no disappointment when we left, despite no pizza shot. Save your carb credits for the week, Pizza Espresso is one place you definitely have to try.

4 / 5 yums!
