Rockpool Bar, Melbourne

It’s not a Chrysler and Jeep clearance sale at the Bar of Rockpool, just business as usual. You won’t get the priority attention from the staff like you would at the restaurant, but who cares when you don’t need a booking yet still have access to not only the full but also the inexpensive bar menu.

There’s a selection of small and large sharing plates including oysters, ceviche, quality cold cuts and the famed four raw tastes of the sea. There’s only two choices for mains that really matter, the first being a wagyu bolognaise with spaghetti that focuses more on the divine texture of the prized bovine. As if taking the piss out of Macca’s cheeseburger, Mr Ponytail gives it the full options upgrade with a David Blackmore’s full blood wagyu pattie, a slice of crisp bacon, gruyere cheese and pickled zucchini. Lettuce and tomato on the side. In fine dining style, it’s just big enough that leaves you wanting more. Such a tease.

Unlike Chrysler, the bargains should last at Rockpool. You’ll pay to get the best burger in town.
